Young adulthood is a pivotal stage, often filled with milestones like starting a career, building relationships, and gaining independence. However, for young adults diagnosed with cancer, these life experiences are often disrupted, leaving them to navigate a complex blend of physical, emotional, and social challenges. To address these unique struggles, ETHOS Treatment LLC has introduced a virtual therapy program tailored for Pennsylvania residents aged 18-35 who are either undergoing cancer treatment or are survivors.

This program is more than a support group. It’s a community built on understanding and expert guidance. Virtual group sessions, held weekly on Wednesdays from 5 to 6:30 p.m., provide a safe space for young adults to connect with others who truly understand their journey—all while accommodating the needs of immunocompromised individuals.

The Unique Challenges of Young Adults with Cancer

For many young adults, a cancer diagnosis can be profoundly isolating. Patients often find themselves in a demographic limbo: too old to relate to pediatric patients and too young to connect with older adults undergoing treatment. As a result, they may struggle to find peers who understand their experiences. According to Spaeder, who was diagnosed with Chordoma at age 22, “Young adults with cancer are often treated at children’s hospitals, where they have no peer connection. Or, if they are treated alongside other adults, they tend to be far younger than other patients and miss out on the support of their contemporaries.”

This isolation can extend beyond treatment. Survivors frequently grapple with the aftermath of their experience in ways that set them apart from their peers. Many miss out on critical life milestones, such as attending college on time, advancing their careers, or forming lasting relationships. Others face visible reminders of their journey—scars, hair loss, or lingering physical health issues—while also contending with less visible challenges like anxiety, depression, and PTSD.

Bridging the Gap Between Personal and Professional Expertise

ETHOS’ virtual therapy program is unique in its approach. Unlike traditional peer-led support groups, this program is led by licensed clinical therapists who are also cancer survivors. Both Attaquin and Spaeder bring a depth of personal and professional insight to their roles. Having experienced the isolation and emotional hurdles of young adulthood with cancer, they are uniquely equipped to guide others toward healing.

“At a time when we are most vulnerable, we had no one else to talk to who truly understood,” Spaeder shares. “I wish I had this opportunity. You don’t have to feel alienated. There is a community available.”

The program not only fosters connection but also provides structured therapy to address the mental health impacts of cancer. Participants work on treatment plans to improve their overall wellness and develop coping strategies, moving beyond venting to actionable steps for healing.

A Broader Mission of Care

ETHOS is known for its comprehensive mental health services, with outpatient centers across Pennsylvania and a robust Telehealth offering. In addition to programs for young adult cancer survivors, ETHOS provides specialized care for individuals with gambling disorders, eating disorders, and trauma, as well as support groups for first responders. This new initiative reinforces the organization’s commitment to meeting the diverse needs of its community.
